Crowley Hilltop Preserve Celebration

Last week, Mary, our Development and Outreach Director, and I visited our Crowley Hilltop Preserve, just outside of the town of Crowley Lakes. This is a 33 acre property the ESLT purchased last year, and we have yet to celebrate! Mary and I were planning our spring celebration, and all are invited! It will be Sunday, June 28th, from 4 to 7pm. We want to share this unique piece of open space, …continue reading

Wildlife Corridor Hike (and some plants too…)

Last Saturday, May 23, about 20 members and interested folks gathered above Swall Meadows for a hike through the the Wheeler Ridge Round Valley mule deer migration corridor led by our executive director Karen Ferrell-Ingram. We toured around the corridor looking at bugs, plants, wildlife, vistas (and thunderclouds!). The location was particularly good for illustrating what a narrow region the many deer and other wildlife must …continue reading

Benton Hot Springs Ranch field trip

On May 16, 2009, locals and visitors gathered at the Benton Hot Springs Ranch conservation easement, just outside of Benton, to have a morning adventure of birding and botanizing. Led by Claus Engelhardt of the Eastern Sierra Audubon Society, Stephen Ingram of the California Native Plant Society, Karen Ferrell-Ingram of the ESLT, and Bill Bramlette, landowner, the morning was full of natural history tidbits. Bill shared his four- generation perspective …continue reading

On the Land

Today I got to wander around one of the ESLT's conservation easements, Benton Hot Springs Ranch, with our Executive Director Karen, our Stewardship Coordinator Aaron, and two Audubon Birding specialists, Claus and Connie Engelhardt. We were preparing for the field trip on Saturday, May 16th, in collaboration with Bill Bramlette, Eastern Sierra Audubon Society and the California Native Plant Society. With the Boundary Peak looming over us, we began making our way …continue reading

Celebrating Community Connections

April 19th, Bishop City Park Last Sunday, the Eastern Sierra Land Trust joined Bishop in celebrating Community Connections at the park. Many great local organizations were there, offering advice on Eastern Sierra living, and providing kid activities. Our booth featured the "Living in the Eastern Sierra Quilt." The Flight of the Lady

Painted Lady butterflies have been pouring through our preserved lands in the migration corridor, single-mindedly going north. The waves of fluttering wings are truly impressive and thought-provoking. How do they survive the 60mph gusts of wind we've been having? Check out these links to learn more! For more information, read our "On the Wild Side" article in our Spring 2006 newsletter: the Flight of the Lady. For real time information …continue reading

Spring Is Here

Spring is here, and here at the Eastern Sierra Land Trust, we are proud to announce that we are collaborating with our landlords to put in a pollinator friendly vegetable and flower garden. Dennis Oakeshott (ESLT member with his lovely wife, Jeanne) and his furry friend Migo are the muscle and brains for this project. First to go is the useless bermuda grass lawn, which took some heavy equipment to remove. Next, …continue reading
