Pollinator Week 2022: Miner Bees

We’re starting off National Pollinator Week with one of our fuzzy friends, the miner bee, also known as a chimney bee. Miner bees include many species that are part of the family Andrenidae and they are often mistaken for bumble bees. These small-to-medium-sized, fuzzy bees are widespread and–good news– typically do not sting humans. Miner bees are often solitary bees, meaning they don’t belong to a hive, and they like to nest …continue reading

Monarch Butterfly

Monarch Motivation: Population Increase in 2021

Sometimes you need some good news and motivation, and we have some for you today–the western monarch butterfly population has increased! Biologists and volunteers count overwintering monarchs in coastal California each year. During the fall of 2021, the Xerces Society counted nearly 250,000 butterflies compared to less than 2,000 butterflies counted during fall 2020. Although that is merely a sliver of the millions of monarch butterflies that migrated in the 1980s and …continue reading

Brainstorming Through A Second AmeriCorps Year

I'm not going to lie... my second AmeriCorps term with ESLT has been challenging! I joke about how, at the start of my second term, we promised it would be different form my first year. What we didn't know was just how different it would be. I started the year with an absolutely incredible experience at the Land Trust Alliance's Rally, a national land conservation conference in Raleigh, North Carolina, and I …continue reading

Kids explore the Bishop Paiute Tribe's Conservation Open Space Area (COSA) with the Taking Root Program. Photo by Paul Williams. By Marie Ring. I'm constantly impressed with the youth in the Bishop area. Whenever I'm out teaching a lesson, I often feel like I learn just as much from the students as they're hopefully learning from me. They're caring, kind and inquisitive, and most importantly, they're budding conservationists. On a …continue reading
