SUMMARY:World Migratory Bird Day At Black Lake Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Eastern Sierra Land Trust &\nEastern Sierra Audubon Society\nCelebrates World Migratory Bird Day\nAt Black Lake Preserve\nSaturday May 8th & Sunday May 9th \n  \nWhat is World Migratory Bird Day? \nImagine you are on a road trip and navigating with a map you’ve used many times before. On this map are key stops that you know are reliable for food\, fuel\, and rest. However\, what if one day you arrive to one of those key stops that you’ve been counting on and it’s gone? No place to rest\, refuel the car\, drink water\, eat food… nothing to replenish yourself to continue the journey! \nLike a key pit-stop\, migration stops are extremely important for traveling birds. Even more\, Black Lake Preserve—where 100% of its birds are migrants\, is an extremely important place for bird in the eastern branch of the Pacific Flyway. \n  \nSo why should you come to see them? \nIt is important for us to visit and see places that are unique\, special\, and that play a vital role for migrant species as it helps us understand the necessity and benefit of preserving with purpose. \n  \n“It is a privilege for us to even see it and experience it.” – Santiago Escruceria \n  \nWe invite you to celebrate the importance of migratory birds passing through the Eastern Sierra on the weekend of May 8th-9th for a self-guided birding tour at Black Lake Preserve. \n  \nBelow we share with you all you need to be a sharp birder\, such as: \n\nImportance of Migratory Birds and their preservation\nQuick how-to on recording your findings\nDirections & etiquette\nAttached site specific bird list\n\n  \nWhy are Migratory Birds important? Migratory birds are essential to the habitats in which they return to seasonally for mating and feeding and nesting. Birds play a vital role in pollination\, food production\, food sources\, and pest regulation. It is crucial that the habitats which these migrating birds return to from their long journeys\, are healthy habitats. \nWhy is Black Lake Preserve an important habitat? Black Lake Preserve was donated to ESLT by Michelle Browner in 2014 and with help from Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)\, Black Lake Preserve is permanently protected from certain uses including development and subdivision. This means it will remain as open space habitat in perpetuity. As well\, Black Lake Preserve’s wetlands are an important stopover for migratory birds\, earning it a designation by Audubon Society as an “Important Bird Area.” \nBirding and recording your findings: \n\nBecause this is an Important Bird Area\, we would love for you to share with us the birds you see and record your data to Cornell Lab of Ornithology in a citizen science effort.\nUse a pencil & paper or try eBird if you have a smartphone! A how-to for using the eBird birding app can be found at here.\nIf you take pictures or see anything exciting\, tell us and we’ll share it on the ESLT website! Send your findings & photos to Gabrielle@eslt.org.\n\n  \n \n  \nHow to get to Black Lake from Bishop\, CA: \n\nDrive 34 miles north on Highway 6 to the town of Benton\nTurn left (west) on Highway 120\nGo through the historic town of Benton Hot Springs and reach the intersection of Benton Crossing Road and Highway 120\nIn about a mile\, will reach two dirt roads—both are accessible\n\n  \nOnce you’ve arrived: \n\nPark along Hwy 120 on the side nearest the lake and walk the dirt road to the turn-out at the end. Here you will reach the interpretive sign & overlook.\nDriving the dirt road between the Hwy and the Birdwatching Overlook is not recommended (narrow\, soft sand and full of car scratchers).\nFrom the overlook\, you can read the interpretive sign—a watercolor map with a trail indicated (the trail is a winding footpath that follows old cattle trails)\n\n  \nBirding Etiquette and Safety Protocols: \n\nPlease leave your furry friends at home or keep them on leash and well-behaved\nKeep noise levels down to avoid startling wildlife\nUsing binoculars and avoid getting too close to wildlife\nBe kind to fellow birders\nPlease wear a mask when passing by other birders\nTreat Black Lake Preserve like your own migratory habitat and keep it clean!\n\n  \nWhat to Bring: \n\nHat\nWater\nSnack\nSunscreen\nBinoculars\nBird identification book (i.e. Sibley Bird Guide)\n\n  \nPlease Note: This is a self-guided event so you are welcome to come either day at any time. \nHowever\, if you are comfortable and interested\, Santiago Escruceria\, Eastern Sierra Audubon’s President\, will be at Black Lake on May 8th at 8am offering some guided tours if you are interested – mask wearing is highly encouraged for these to keep folks safe and comfortable! \n  \nDownload printable handout of this information here.

SUMMARY:Paya Film Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Paya: The Water Story of the Paiute Film Screening and Panel Discussion\nMay 25th from 6:00pm-7:30pm\n\nYou’re probably aware of some of the stories of water in the Owens Valley and Los Angeles. Books have been written on the subject and even Hollywood movies made about it. But there is more\, much more\, to the story.\n  \nPaya: The Water Story of the Paiute tells the untold story of America’s longest-lived water war between the Owens Valley Paiute and the City of Los Angeles. Millennia before Los Angeles diverted the Owens River through the Los Angeles Aqueduct\, the Paiute had constructed miles of intricate irrigation systems.\n  \nUsing archival maps from 1856\, the filmmakers spent four years working with Paiute elders to locate and map their remnant irrigation systems\, and ultimately laying the foundation for a ‘first use’ water rights case now underway.\n  \n\nJoin ESLT as co-host with The Owens Valley Indian Water Commission for an online screening of Paya: The Water Story of the Paiute and a moderated panel discussion with the following indigenous water protectors:\n\nBrian Poncho\, Bishop Paiute Tribe’s Board Representative for the Owens Valley Indian Water Commission;\nPaul Huette\, Vice Chairman of the Owens Valley Indian Water Commission; and\nTeri Red Owl\, Executive Director of Owens Valley Indian Water Commission.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:National Pollinator Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:National Pollinator Week \nMonday\, June 21th – Sunday\, June 27th \nNational Pollinator Week is here! What is National Pollinator Week\, you ask? It is a time for celebration and awareness of the health of pollinators! \nPollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem\, food chains\, and habitat well-being. In the United States alone\, bees are essential to the 150 and counting food crops. And while bees are a quintessential pollinator\, other pollinators that play just as important roles to the reproduction of plants include butterflies\, moths\, hummingbirds\, bats\, wasps\, and flies. \nAs there are a handful of pollinators\, there are countless native pollinators to California and some even native to the Owens Valley alone. The number of bees native to California reaches to about 1\,600 species and about 200 recorded native butterflies. \nIn support of our pollinators we are going to feature a native pollinator of the day throughout this important week! Along with a little info about each special species\, there may be a fun activity to do with the kids\, family\, or friends so keep a look out for these as well! \nA big action that you can take for our native pollinators and species is planting for them. Certify your garden as pollinator-friendly with ESLT through the Eastside Pollinator Garden Project. Learn more about this here. \nLet’s support our winged\, buzzing\, and busy native pollinators together! \n  \nVisit ESLT’s blog each day for info and activities on these featured pollinators:\nMonday\, June 21st – Squash Bees \nTuesday\, June 22nd – Monarch Butterflies \nWednesday\, June 23rd – Mason Bees & Blue Orchard Bees \nThursday\, June 24th – Leaf Cutter Bees \nFriday\, June 25th – Hummingbirds \nSaturday\, June 26th – Globe Mallow Bees \n  \n

Last year the statewide cleanup brought over 74\,000 volunteers out and removed over 900\,000 pounds of debris! \nShow some love and respect to the places you cherish and join us on Saturday\, September 11\, from 8:30am-11am. \nEastern Sierra Land Trust is following CDC and local public health department COVID-19 safety protocols in efforts to keep ourselves and our community safe while working to protect the health of our environment is still a priority. Therefore\, during this all-outdoor cleanup\, we are asking that volunteers wear masks and be mindful of distance. \nWe will be working to remove trash along the Owens River stretch near the Artesian Springs and Buckley Ponds. Volunteers will meet at dirt parking spots near the bridge over the Owens along East Line Street; 37°21’42.4″N 118°20’21.8″W \n \nData collection is key to this cleanup\, as the California Coastal Commission will use this data for conservation efforts and studies. \nWe hope that you are able to join us in making a dent in the litter along the river and cleaning up our beloved waterways for humans and wildlife alike! \nFor more information and to register for this event\, contact Gabrielle at gabrielle@eslt.org.

SUMMARY:Mule Deer Migration Corridor Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Mule deer are an iconic species in the Western US. Perhaps you have seen them take bounding\, stiff-legged hops through the sagebrush\, or noticed their large\, mule-like ears. Maybe you saw a mule deer from the Round Valley herd! \nThe Round Valley mule deer herd migrates seasonally between the valley floor in the winter and mountain meadows in the summer. On their journey\, they must pass through a thin bottleneck in Swall Meadows. Eastern Sierra Land Trust (ESLT) was founded to conserve this important migration corridor through conservation easements. \nCDFW Human-Wildlife Conflict Scientist Dan Taylor will lead us on an educational tour of the Round Valley mule deer herd’s winter range. CalTrans Senior Biologist Katie Rodriguez and Mono County Supervisor Stacy Corless will also be in attendance to share an update about the Mammoth Lakes 395 Wildlife Crossing Project. \nThe Mule Deer Migration Corridor Field Trip is a free\, family-friendly event. Please do not bring dogs\, but do remember to dress for the weather. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided. Binoculars are recommended to view the deer\, but they are not required. The event may be postponed if it is storming. Please RSVP to Claire at claire@eslt.org for the meeting location and mark your calendars for March 26th from 2-4 pm. \nThanks to Heather Freeman for the usage of her photo.

SUMMARY:ESLT's Deep Roots Pollinator Garden Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that gardening with native plants can save you money and water? It’s true – native plants found in the Eastern Sierra are often drought tolerant and require less maintenance than lawns or high water-use plants. Native plants also attract pollinators like birds and butterflies that are essential for wildflowers and productive gardens.  \nLearn how to design a garden using native plants at ESLT’s free Pollinator Garden Workshop from 10am-1:00pm on April 9th. Local gardeners will present on topics that will help you design or revitalize your beautiful\, pollinator-friendly garden. The topics and presenters will include: \nHow to Garden with Native Plants- Katie Quinlan\, Plant Sales and Greenhouse Manager for the California Native Plant Society\, Bristlecone Chapter  \nInstalling Drip Irrigation- Roberta Lagomarsini of the UC Master Gardeners of Inyo and Mono Counties \nFire Safe Landscaping-  Roberta Lagomarsini of the UC Master Gardeners of Inyo and Mono Counties \nSoil Secrets for Healthy Plants- Julie Fontaine\, Eastern Sierra restoration ecologist and soil specialist \nGardening for Wildlife- Pete Pumphrey\, former president of the Eastern Sierra Audubon Society \nFood Preservation 101: Equipment Essentials – Jan Hambleton and Trish Schlichting from the UC Master Food Preservers of Inyo and Mono Counties\n\nThis workshop is part of ESLT’s Eastside Pollinator Garden Project\, which is deeply rooted in our Eastern Sierra communities. The project has helped 147 Eastside gardeners create pollinator-friendly yards since the program began in 2014! Through our certified garden program\, ESLT provides support and expert advice for your garden\, and you may be eligible for a voucher for native plant purchases. Learn more about the Eastside Pollinator Garden Project page on our website. \nWe will host this event in the Community Demonstration Garden in Bishop City Park. Space is limited\, so please make sure to RSVP to claire@eslt.org if you wish to attend.  \nThank you to the UC Master Gardeners and UC Master Food Preservers of Inyo and Mono Counties for their support in putting this event together. \nPhoto by Peter Miller

SUMMARY:World Migratory Bird Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:Come bird with us at ESLT’s Black Lake Preserve in celebration of World Migratory Bird Day! Black Lake is a rare desert wetland north of Benton in Adobe Valley that is an important stopover site for migratory birds. The alkali lakes and wetlands in Adobe Valley provide a great environment for our feathered friends to rest and refuel during migration.  \nJoin us for a guided bird walk from 8-10 am on May 14th at Black Lake Preserve to spot these visiting birds\, or use our self-guided birding materials on May 15th to bird on your own! If you can’t make it out to Black Lake Preserve\, we will provide information for self-guided birding at the Bishop Paiute Reservation Conservation Open Space (COSA). Times and meeting locations will be provided soon. \nThis event will also be a community science effort to document the birds that we see. You don’t have to be a scientist to participate in community science! After you document the birds we see\, scientists will learn from your observations. Data gathered from community science informs conservation decisions and can track what is happening in the natural world in real time. Please let us know which birds you observe or use the eBird app. You can find a guide to using eBird here.  \nPlease RSVP to Claire at claire@eslt.org for updates.

SUMMARY:Setting the Course: ESLT Community Chat
DESCRIPTION:Join ESLT for a community chat as we celebrate 21 years of land conservation! Grab your lunch and jump online from wherever you are. Get the highlights from Kay Ogden\, ESLT Executive Director/CEO\, of the recently protected historic 1\,741-acre working ranch with miles of rivers and streams that flow through its verdant meadows providing vital habitat for wildlife. \nWhile we briefly reflect back on where we’ve been\, we’d love to hear from you on where you’d like to see ESLT go in the next 20 years! What do you think is most important to protect in the Eastern Sierra? Brainstorm some ideas with us! This recent conservation agreement connects over 15\,000 acres of conserved land and aquatic habitat in Bridgeport Valley. How can we ensure that wildlife will roam and water will flow for generations to come through more conservation like this? \n\nPhoto by Dwayne Leonard\, Ranch Memories Photography.

SUMMARY:Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:We are planning a highway cleanup on July 16 from 7:30-10:00 am to remove trash from ESLT’s sponsored section of Highway 395. Your help is greatly appreciated and will keep litter away from wildlife and out of sensitive ecosystems. \nIn order to avoid as much of the sun and heat as possible\, we will get started early. We recommend that volunteers wear long pants to protect against thistle\, carry water bottles\, and bring sun protection. You may want to bring a backpack\, as we will walk along the highway for up to a mile. ESLT will provide trash bags\, trash grabbers\, leather gloves\, bright vests\, and hardhats. Please RSVP to Claire at claire@eslt.org to reserve a spot and get more information.

SUMMARY:Lands & Legacy 2022: BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:Eastern Sierra Land Trust is inviting you to participate in collecting scientific observations in a Citizen Science BioBlitz event! We are excited to get onto the land with you as part of our 21st Anniversary Lands & Legacy Celebration. Local art prizes are available to community members who participate – scroll to the bottom of this page to read more.  \nWhat is a BioBlitz?\nA BioBlitz is a community science event that brings together people of all ages to observe nature. It’s kind of like a flash mob for identifying and counting species. Community members get together outside and use iNaturalist to document the plants\, birds\, insects\, reptiles\, and other life that they find. BioBlitzes can contribute useful data that scientists can learn from. They are also a fun opportunity for our community to come together and learn about nature.  \nEvent details (in-person and DIY)\nThis BioBlitz has an in-person and DIY option. ESLT will have an in-person event on Sunday\, August 21st from 8am-10am. We will meet at the Bishop Paiute Reservation Conservation Open Space Area (COSA). The COSA is 24.8 acres of wetlands and walking paths that have been set aside by the Bishop Paiute Tribe for conservation\, learning\, recreation and science. There is plenty of parking next to the Bishop BLM and National Forest offices behind the DMV. We will meet by the gate to the COSA at the back of the parking area (North end). There are no restrooms in the COSA\, but there is a gas station with facilities close to our meeting spot. Coffee and pastries will be provided. \nA map link to the meeting location for the BioBlitz is here. \nIf you can’t join us in Bishop that morning\, you can still join in the fun with ESLT’s DIY Backyard BioBlitz! Get outside on your own and record your observations. Whether you’re in your backyard or the backcountry\, we want to know what you find. \nFor both the In-Person COSA BioBlitz and the DIY Backyard BioBlitz\, you will need to make an account with iNaturalist. Don’t worry– you won’t need to identify all of your observations! The great thing about iNaturalist is that it’s an online community of scientists and nature lovers. Other users (as well as the app) can help you ID your finds!\n \nHow to use iNaturalist\nTo learn more about iNaturalist and how to use it\, please watch these tutorials or read the instructions at the bottom of this page. \nTo Join ESLT’s BioBlitz Project on the iNaturalist App\, search for “2022 ESLT BioBlitz.” \nRSVP for the in-person BioBlitz\nAlthough registration is not required to attend\, we would appreciate an RSVP. Please email Claire at claire@eslt.org if you plan on attending. Bring your cameras\, binoculars\, sun protection\, and bird books to the COSA. \nPrizes\nWe have some prizes for those who participate! The challenges to win prizes are below: \n1. Most overall observations\n2. Most identified species\n3. Most bird species\n4. Most invertebrates\n5. Most flowering plants\n6. Most reptiles\n7. Most native plants \nWinning one of these challenges could get you an Ann Logan art piece/product of your choice!  \nPrizes include: \nEastern Sierra landscape hat \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n“Sierra Mountainscape” 12 x 17 print \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n“Blood Moon Bristlecones” 8.5 x 11 print \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHow to use iNaturalist (full instructions)\nThere are two different ways to use iNaturalist to participate in the BioBlitz. You will need to make an account and join our project. Here are the instructions for both options. \nHow to use iNaturalist on a smartphone  \n1. Download the iNaturalist app and make an account.\n\n2. Click three bars in the top left corner and choose “Projects” from the drop down menu. \n3. Click the magnifying glass on top right corner and search “2022 ESLT BioBlitz”. You should see the purple ESLT logo. Click on the project. \n4. You will need to join the project to upload your observations to it. The project will only be open on 8/21\, so you won’t be able to join it before then. On the top of the page you should see a button on the left that says “Join”. If you can’t see it\, you may have to rotate your screen so the app lets you see the entire page. Click “Join”. \n5. Click the three bars in the top left corner and then click on your username at the top. This should take you to a page titled “My Observations”. \n6. Click the green plus button in the bottom right and either upload a photo or take a photo on the app of an organism. Your phone should record location\, date and time. You can choose to obscure the location or make it private if you wish by clicking on “Location Visibility”. You can also change the location if it doesn’t look correct by clicking on it. You can also add notes and sounds. \n7. We have also created a test project that you can join and upload a practice observation to. The project is named “ESLT (test).”
