DESCRIPTION:As the seasons change and holidays approach\, we invite young artists to explore and express the theme of gratitude through their creative works. What does gratitude look like to you? How do you capture the feeling of thankfulness in your art? \nWhether it’s the joy of family\, the beauty of nature\, the kindness of friends\, or the small everyday things that bring you happiness\, we want to see how you depict gratitude in full color. Use your imagination and creativity to show what you are thankful for. \nGuidelines for Submission: \n-Open to all young artists ages 5-18 in Inyo and Mono Counties. \n-Submissions can be in any medium: painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, photography\, poetry\, etc. \n-Work should be original and created for this show. \n-Each piece must include a short description explaining how it represents gratitude and/or the inspiration. \n-One submission per person. \n-Submissions accepted October 1- 25. Send a photo of the submission to gena@eslt.org. It means protecting special places in the Eastern Sierra like Black Lake Preserve forever. DESCRIPTION:Come birding with us to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day! Black Lake is a rare desert wetland north of Benton in Adobe Valley that is an important stopover site for migratory birds. The alkali lakes and wetlands in Adobe Valley provide a great environment for our feathered friends to rest and refuel during migration. \nJoin ESLT and the Eastern Sierra Bird Alliance (ESBA) for a morning of birdwatching at a rare sparkling wetland in Adobe Valley – ESLT’s Black Lake Preserve. In honor of World Migratory Bird Day\, we will learn all about the migrating species that visit this lake and those that call it home. Your help will make a big difference in keeping litter away from wildlife and protecting our region’s sensitive ecosystems. \nWe’ll meet at the ESLT office (250 N Fowler Street) at 8:00 AM and caravan together to the cleanup site. To avoid the heat\, we’ll get started early. Please wear long pants to protect against thistle\, bring a water bottle\, and use sun protection. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special talk\, Understanding Bird Songs\, with David Lukas at C5 Studios. Since the dawn of time humans have been fascinated and inspired by bird songs. But how do we study bird songs today\, and what have these studies taught us about the world of bird song? In this talk we will explore how and why birds sing\, and how we study bird songs as a way of understanding what they are saying to each other. This talk will open a new world for you because bird songs and vocalizations are a huge part of how birds interact with each other\, and they are one of the most important ways we appreciate birds. \nDavid Lukas is well-known naturalist and author who has studied and written extensively about the natural history and birds of the Sierra Nevada. He has also led thousands of natural history tours\, classes\, workshops\, and presentations. David’s most recent project is producing a weekly nature newsletter at www.lukasguides.com. \nThis event is a collaboration between Eastern Sierra Land Trust and C5 Studios Community Arts Center.
