SUMMARY:ESLT's Deep Roots Pollinator Garden Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that gardening with native plants can save you money and water? It’s true – native plants found in the Eastern Sierra are often drought tolerant and require less maintenance than lawns or high water-use plants. Native plants also attract pollinators like birds and butterflies that are essential for wildflowers and productive gardens.  \nLearn how to design a garden using native plants at ESLT’s free Pollinator Garden Workshop from 10am-1:00pm on April 9th. Local gardeners will present on topics that will help you design or revitalize your beautiful\, pollinator-friendly garden. The topics and presenters will include: \nHow to Garden with Native Plants- Katie Quinlan\, Plant Sales and Greenhouse Manager for the California Native Plant Society\, Bristlecone Chapter  \nInstalling Drip Irrigation- Roberta Lagomarsini of the UC Master Gardeners of Inyo and Mono Counties \nFire Safe Landscaping-  Roberta Lagomarsini of the UC Master Gardeners of Inyo and Mono Counties \nSoil Secrets for Healthy Plants- Julie Fontaine\, Eastern Sierra restoration ecologist and soil specialist \nGardening for Wildlife- Pete Pumphrey\, former president of the Eastern Sierra Audubon Society \nFood Preservation 101: Equipment Essentials – Jan Hambleton and Trish Schlichting from the UC Master Food Preservers of Inyo and Mono Counties\n\nThis workshop is part of ESLT’s Eastside Pollinator Garden Project\, which is deeply rooted in our Eastern Sierra communities. The project has helped 147 Eastside gardeners create pollinator-friendly yards since the program began in 2014! Through our certified garden program\, ESLT provides support and expert advice for your garden\, and you may be eligible for a voucher for native plant purchases. Learn more about the Eastside Pollinator Garden Project page on our website. \nWe will host this event in the Community Demonstration Garden in Bishop City Park. Space is limited\, so please make sure to RSVP to claire@eslt.org if you wish to attend.  \nThank you to the UC Master Gardeners and UC Master Food Preservers of Inyo and Mono Counties for their support in putting this event together. \nPhoto by Peter Miller

SUMMARY:National Pollinator Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:National Pollinator Week \nMonday\, June 21th – Sunday\, June 27th \nNational Pollinator Week is here! What is National Pollinator Week\, you ask? It is a time for celebration and awareness of the health of pollinators! \nPollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem\, food chains\, and habitat well-being. In the United States alone\, bees are essential to the 150 and counting food crops. And while bees are a quintessential pollinator\, other pollinators that play just as important roles to the reproduction of plants include butterflies\, moths\, hummingbirds\, bats\, wasps\, and flies. \nAs there are a handful of pollinators\, there are countless native pollinators to California and some even native to the Owens Valley alone. The number of bees native to California reaches to about 1\,600 species and about 200 recorded native butterflies. \nIn support of our pollinators we are going to feature a native pollinator of the day throughout this important week! Along with a little info about each special species\, there may be a fun activity to do with the kids\, family\, or friends so keep a look out for these as well! \nA big action that you can take for our native pollinators and species is planting for them. Certify your garden as pollinator-friendly with ESLT through the Eastside Pollinator Garden Project. Learn more about this here. \nLet’s support our winged\, buzzing\, and busy native pollinators together! \n  \nVisit ESLT’s blog each day for info and activities on these featured pollinators:\nMonday\, June 21st – Squash Bees \nTuesday\, June 22nd – Monarch Butterflies \nWednesday\, June 23rd – Mason Bees & Blue Orchard Bees \nThursday\, June 24th – Leaf Cutter Bees \nFriday\, June 25th – Hummingbirds \nSaturday\, June 26th – Globe Mallow Bees \n  \n
